What Is Ayurveda, and Where does it Come From?

Ayurveda, from the Sanskrit word meaning "science of life and longevity", is the world's most ancient system of preventive health care.

Developed in India over 7,000 years ago, it is a natural approach to creating balance in the mind and body and of strengthening the body's healing abilities. Learn more about Ayurveda here.

What is Pulse Diagnosis?

Pulse diagnosis is the traditional Ayurvedic method of locating disorder in the body. According to the Ayurvedic philosophy, every organ of the body can be located through the pulse and will tell of its medical history, its present condition, whether it is healthy or beginning to fail.

Pulse diagnosis is a powerful tool in finding the cause of a disorder in a person's body, and its accuracy is the key to our success in treating chronic diseases. Click here to learn more about the Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis.

Can I get a Special Diet for Losing Weight?

Dr. Raj recommends a pulse diagnosis to determine the cause of the individual being overweight or obese, and this cause will then be treated with herbal medicines suitable to the patient's particular constitution. Nutritional advice is given, helping the patient to understand which foods are recommendable and which should be avoided in order to bring the body's weight into correct balance.

The old saying "one man's meat is another man's poison" is perfectly applicable in Ayurveda, because every food contains the five elements (fire, water, earth, air, space), or doshas, in various proportions. The food we eat affects our elemental balance in a positive or negative way. Dr. Raj can also, if necessary, use hypnotherapy to heal a deep-seated negative self-image and replace it with a positive, life-affirming self-image.

How Long do I Have to Take the Ayurvedic Herbal Medicines?

There's an old saying: an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Although it depends on the disease which a person presents with, people will experience improvement within 10 to 15 days of being in treatment, or often sooner. The full course of the herbal treatment should be taken so that the disease is properly treated and the complete benefits can be achieved. One must remember that the longer one has had a disease, the longer it will take to completely restore the body to good health. Although most patients report feeling better very quickly, it still takes time to fully rebuild damaged tissues and muscles.

For example, someone suffering from irritable bowel syndrome may experience relief from their symptoms and assume they are ready to discontinue the herbs. However, this is a mistake. Why? Because the herbs are essential to continue strengthening the bowel musculature, which will have atrophied because of the patient's long-term bowel problems. If treatment is discontinued before the appropriate time, the untreated disease can very quickly express its symptoms again.

Similarly, women with menstrual problems taking our Ayurvedic/naturopathic herbs may experience relief after the first menstrual period. However, a more complete result will be achieved after the third menstruation when the reproductive system has had time to fully regain its proper functioning. So, it is important to continue the treatment without interruptions until the healing cycle is complete, otherwise the symptoms will reappear in a short time.

What are the Main Differences between Ayurveda and Conventional Medicine?

The first and most significant difference between the ancient Ayurvedic medical system and modern medicine is that Ayurveda is a complete health care system.

The second difference is that Ayurvedic medicines are without any of the side effects typically experienced with conventional medicines.

The third main difference is that we work on the cause instead of the symptoms. You might ask - how is this done? Take, as an example, someone who has arthritis that is expressing symptoms of swelling and pain.

We must first find out how this condition is being created - that is, what is the cause? What is triggering the pain our patient is feeling? What has caused the swelling? There are many blocks in such a situation - one block is pushing another, which is in turn is pushing another, and still another is pushing it all. In this particular case we have to work through all the blocks to remove the first block, then the second, the third and, finally, the original block that was causing the symptoms of the disease, and then finally we can recreate the original balance.

Another distinctive feature of SRS Ayurveda Clinic is that our customized medicines work simultaneously on the mind, the body and the emotions. They work on all of these levels together, not just the physical. We acknowledge that every individual is unique - people are not all the same. The mind works differently in everyone. This also sets Ayurveda apart from conventional medicine, which doesn't take people's individual differences into account.

What Role does Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis play?

First of all, we identify the cause of the disease and all the possible solutions to treating it through the pulse diagnosis, the traditional Ayurvedic method of locating disorder in the body. Just as conventional medicine in the western world uses X-rays and several other different kinds of scans and medical equipment to analyse a person's state of health, Ayurveda, too, has its own diagnostic tools, such as the eyes, the tongue, the lips, the skin and the nails, which are all distinct indicators of a person's health.

The pulse diagnosis, in particular, is regarded as one of the most accurate tools in an Ayurvedic doctor's arsenal. Every organ can be located through the pulse and can tell us its medical history, its present condition, and whether it is healthy or beginning to fail. From thereon we can determine which solution is most appropriate for the individual. In this way, we make an alliance between the condition and its solution for each particular person. The high level of accuracy of the pulse diagnosis is the key to our success in treating chronic or difficult diseases at our SRS Ayurveda Clinic.

What Other Methods do you use at SRS Ayurveda Clinic to Improve the Quality of Life of your Patients?

Actually, the Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis itself is only one part of our whole diagnosis. There are several other methods we use at SRS Ayurveda Clinic to treat disease. These methods, where appropriate, may include an evaluation of the patient's diet, where we emphasize what to eat and what not to eat according to the individual's constitution, the preparation of customized herbal medicines, home remedies (as often things you can find in the kitchen such as cumin powder, turmeric and even milk can have medicinal properties if used correctly), detoxification of the body using Ayurvedic methods, exercising accordingly and last but not least balancing the body's energy through meditation.

Meditation allows us to learn how to manage our internal energy, which can become blocked for various reasons. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, our brain is divided into the conscious and the subconscious mind, and through these we are programmed from childhood as to how to behave, how to think and how to deal with the problems in our everyday life. Whatever we are today is due to the programming in our past, which is why we do the things we do. Basically, we live our lives on automatic pilot.

This programming happens through our parents, our teachers and the society and circumstances in which we live. Newspapers, the internet and, of course, television also play a huge part in our lives. We receive on average more than 4000 messages everyday, which means we don't behave how we want to, we behave how people have told us to behave. This means we are not in harmony with our soul; we don't know what we want. This blocked energy can often manifest itself as physical disease.

Meditation creates a connection between you and your own soul - who you are, what you want, and how to get what you want. Ayurveda says that you can reprogramme yourself through meditation to have success, a new life and new challenges by making a conscious decision. This can bring significant change in your life. You program something today, so that something happens tomorrow.

Can you Combine Ayurveda with Conventional Medicine?

Of course, when it comes to highly technological areas of science such as new diagnostic techniques and genetic research, no other medical approach comes close to western medicine. You would not consult an Ayurvedic health practitioner in an acute health crisis; you would go to a western-trained physician. However, Ayurvedic herbal medicine has been proven to be very effective for a wide variety of chronic conditions, the relief of which has eluded western medicine. Still today in India, the options of Ayurvedic medicine and western medicine are considered when evaluating a patient. Sometimes western medicine is the more appropriate, at other times Ayurvedic medicine is more suitable for the individual.
